The price of small-scale sheet metal processing is not determined by a single variable, but rather the result of a game of multiple factors such as materials, processes, molds, quantities, and surface treatments. A deep understanding of these influencing factors is crucial for enterprises to effectively control costs and enhance competitiveness.

1、 Material cost: the fundamental anchor point of price

Materials are the most intuitive component of sheet metal processing costs. The unit price of different materials varies significantly: ordinary cold-rolled steel plates cost about 5000-8000 yuan per ton, while aluminum alloy plates commonly used in new energy vehicles cost as much as 20000-30000 yuan, and high-strength hot formed steel or carbon fiber composite materials have grown exponentially. In addition, the thickness, specifications, and market supply and demand fluctuations of materials can also affect the final purchase price. When selecting materials, it is necessary to seek a balance between performance requirements and cost constraints to avoid waste caused by excessive use of materials.

2、 Process complexity: the cost of technical barriers

The difficulty of the process directly determines the processing unit price. The equipment wear, labor time, and technical requirements for simple planar cutting and complex 3D surface forming are vastly different. For example, the processing cost of ordinary square hole punching and precision micro hole array may differ by several times. When it comes to special processes such as hot forming, welding, hydraulic stretching, etc., professional equipment and highly skilled operators are also required, which will be truthfully reflected in the quotation. The more complex the process, the higher the risk of failure, and the supplier’s quotation usually includes a certain risk premium.

3、 Mold and tooling costs: apportionment of early investment

Sheet metal processing often relies on mold forming. When producing in small batches, the cost of mold development is often difficult to be fully allocated by quantity, which becomes an important reason for the high unit price. Taking a set of ordinary car door inner panel molds as an example, the development cost may reach hundreds of thousands of yuan. If the order is only a few hundred pieces, the cost of the mold shared per piece is quite considerable. If choosing non mold forming (such as laser cutting combined with bending) or using simple fixtures, this expenditure can be effectively reduced, but the impact on process feasibility and product consistency needs to be balanced.

Besides that, there are two other points that we will continue to discuss next time.
